A chance experiment gives an outcome. A random variable applies a numerical rule to that outcome.

Key idea
List values the situation allows
- Write exactly what the variable counts or measures.
- Find the smallest possible value.
- Find the largest possible value.
- Check every value between those limits is achievable.
Worked example
A supply limit changes the maximum
Three people are selected from 4 boys and 2 girls. Let be the number of girls selected.
- The minimum is 0: selecting three boys is possible.
- The maximum is 2: only two girls are available.
Common mistake
Read X, x and P(X = x) differently
- names the random variable.
- stands for one possible numerical value.
- is the probability that takes that value.
- means that 0, 1 and 2 are the only possible values.
A count is usually discrete because there are gaps between possible values. A measured time can take any value in an interval, so it is continuous instead.
Two counters are selected from 3 red and 2 blue counters. Let be the number of red counters selected. State the possible values and find .
