Combining and Expanding Logarithms
Move coefficients inside before combining
To write several logs as one log, first turn each outside coefficient into a power of its input. Then use products for addition and quotients for subtraction.
Worked example
Write 2 ln x − ½ ln y as a single logarithm.
With , the half power is a square root:

Keep the original restrictions when you combine logs. Although is defined for negative too, is only defined for . They are equal on that original domain, not for every non-zero .
