Read the two numbers before balancing
A nucleus contains protons and neutrons. Both are called nucleons. The nuclide symbol records the total number of nucleons and the number that are protons.

- is the proton number. It identifies the element.
- The number of neutrons is found by subtracting the two numbers.

Conserve A and Z separately
A nuclear equation is a bookkeeping statement. The total nucleon number and the total proton number must each be the same before and after the reaction.
- Add the upper numbers.
- Add the lower numbers.
- Solve the missing upper and lower values independently. Do not use the chemical symbols to guess the answer.
