- The distance is measured to the force's line of action, not necessarily to the point where the force touches the object (9702/22/M/J/25 Q2(a)).
- The unit is the newton metre (N m). It has no special name.
- A bigger force, or a bigger distance from the pivot, gives a bigger turning effect. To turn a stiff nut, you push at the far end of the spanner, at right angles to it.
- In base units a moment is kg m² s⁻². This gives a quick unit check before you accept a numerical answer.

Smallest case: force at right angles
A force of 6.0 N acts at right angles to a spanner, 0.50 m from the centre of the nut. Find its moment.

A plank of mass 100 kg rests on a pivot. Its centre of gravity is 4.0 m from the pivot. Find the moment of its weight about the pivot.

When the force is at an angle
- If the force is not at right angles to the arm, the turning effect is smaller. The word perpendicular in the definition handles this.
- There are two equal ways to compute it, and both give for a force at angle to an arm of length .
- Way 1: keep the full force, but measure the perpendicular distance from the pivot to the force's line of action: .
- Way 2: keep the full distance , but take only the part of the force at right angles to the arm: .
- A force whose line of action passes through the pivot has distance zero, so its moment is zero. It cannot turn the object at all.
Common mistake
A force acts at point W on a rod pivoted at O. OY is the perpendicular from O to the line of action of the force. Which product gives the moment about O?
