The Moment of a Force
- A force can do two things: push an object somewhere, and turn it.
- The turning effect of a force is called its . This lesson measures it.
The definition

- The written definition carries marks word by word: force × perpendicular distance of the line of action of the force from the point (9702/22/M/J/25 Q2(a)).
- The unit is the newton metre (N m). It has no special name.
- A bigger force, or a bigger distance from the pivot, gives a bigger turning effect. To turn a stiff nut, you push at the far end of the spanner, at right angles to it.

When the force is at an angle
- If the force is not at right angles to the arm, the turning effect is smaller. The word perpendicular in the definition handles this.
- There are two equal ways to compute it, and both give for a force at angle to an arm of length .
- Way 1: keep the full force, but measure the perpendicular distance from the pivot to the force's line of action: .
- Way 2: keep the full distance , but take only the part of the force at right angles to the arm: .
- A force whose line of action passes through the pivot has distance zero, so its moment is zero. It cannot turn the object at all.
Common mistake
Using the distance along the rod to where the force is applied, instead of the perpendicular distance to the line of the force. When the force is at an angle, these are different lengths, and the multiple-choice options are built from the wrong one (9702/12/M/J/23 Q11).
