Weight & vertical motion
In vertical motion, weight is always present and always points downward. Other forces may change direction or disappear, so redraw the model whenever the physical stage changes.

What is meant by weight?

Suppose a ball of mass 2 kg experiences a constant resistance of 4 N. While it moves upward, both weight and resistance act downward. Taking upward as positive:

Key idea
A support force is not automatically equal to weight
For a passenger of mass in a lift, the floor exerts anormal reaction : the contact force from the floor, perpendicular to the floor. Taking upward as positive gives:

- Contact requires . A negative calculated reaction means the assumed contact model is impossible.
